The developers of Overwatch 2 finally seem to be preparing for a new kind of modes that will improve the game's ranked ecosystem and have officially confirmed that a tournament mode is on the table.
Overwatch 2 Season 5 has four new modes, with the most important arguably yet to come: A full mini-season with 5v5 team queues without any SR restrictions.
According to Game Director Aaron Keller, this new mini-season could be a testing ground for a tournament mode, and he revealed how the team will track its performance.

In a new blog post, Keller talked about the upcoming team queue feature and confirmed that it will require a full premade five-stack to participate.
"Internally, we're closely monitoring your reaction to this mode. It's a different type of match and scoring than our regular ranked mode. If this proves popular, it could open the door for other team-based match types in our game," Keller explained.

Citing examples, Keller specifically pointed to an internal tournament system as something that could come depending on the success of the upcoming team queue.
Additionally, the Director argued that the success of the feature could lead the team to make adjustments to the current grouping restrictions in Overwatch 2. Currently, players cannot queue together in competitive play if their positions are too far apart.
We'll have to see how the upcoming team queue works later in Season 5 and how players, but this could be very good news for Overwatch 2 players who have been waiting years for proper team-focused modes.
