Energy Saver Mode for Desktop and Chrome OS

A common complaint users have about Chrome is that it can be resource-intensive. As such, Google is introducing a new Energy Saver Mode with Chrome 108 to help reduce battery usage while using Chrome.

Energy Saver Mode is a feature for Chrome on Desktop and Chromebooks that conserves your device's battery. When enabled, you can choose to have the mode activate when your battery reaches 20% or lower, or when your computer is unplugged from a power source.

Better support in Chrome 108 for COLRv1 Font and Emoji

Chrome version 98 included COLRv1 Color Gradient Vector Fonts for a cleaner look and greater scalability of emojis. With Chrome version 108, websites can now detect which font formats are supported. If support for COLRv1, higher quality emojis will be displayed.

Virtual keyboard resizing options

Differentiating itself from Apple, Google has Android – an operating system that offers a different set of features for app developers in terms of how content is displayed on the screen and how virtual keyboards are integrated. The keyboard on iOS generally slides over visible content at the bottom of the screen, while the typical behavior on Android is for the keyboard to resize to the visible portion of the website. This also applies to browsers – Chrome typically behaves differently than Safari. While both methods have their pros and cons, they can be confusing for those who need to use or create them.

By allowing developers to choose between the two methods in the new Chrome 108, Google hopes to make it easier for them to create websites that work better on mobile devices. The new method lets website owners tell Chrome how they want it to behave: Should the keyboard slide over the visible content, or should the visible part shrink to fit in the area above the keyboard?

New design for the omnibox on Android

Google is gradually redesigning the omnibox, which is the name of the address and search bar at the top of Chrome. While it may not look different at first glance, a closer look will show that it is more aligned with Material Design 3 than ever before. The design mirrors what you would find in the Google Search.

To be able to see this update in Chrome 108, you must first enable the feature at: chrome://flags/#omnibox-modernize-visual-update.
