YouTube offers a feature, known as picture-in-picture (PiP) , that allows you to have your favorite video playing in a separate window while using other apps. If you want to enable YouTube picture-in-picture (PiP) on an Android phone , follow these steps:

Requirements for using YouTube Picture-in-Picture Mode

How you can use YouTube's PiP feature depends on location .

Specifically:

  • If you live in the United States, you don't need a YouTube Premium to use picture-in-picture mode. However, if you want other features, like the ability to play music videos in the background, you'll need a subscription.
  • If you don't live in the United States, then you'll need a Premium subscriptionif you want to watch videos this way.

How to enable YouTube Picture-in-Picture Mode on Android?

You can enable PiP on your Android phone by first enabling an option in your phone's Settings for the YouTube app, and then using the app itself to enable the feature.

Note: The steps below are for a Samsung. The steps may vary slightly if you have a different type of Android phone.

  • To get started, open your phone's Settings app and select "Apps."
  • From the list of apps, select “YouTube”.
  • On the YouTube app page, select “Picture-in-Picture”.
  • Enable the “ Allow Picture-in-Picture ” option . Once you’re done, close Settings .
  • Then, open the YouTube app on your Android phone . In the top right corner of the app, tap profile icon .
  • Select Settings > General.
  • Enable the “ Picture-in-Picture ” option .

How to use YouTube Picture-in-Picture?

To use PiP, select a video, play it, and exit the app . The video will continue to play in a separate window on screen .

You can control video playback using YouTube's floating media player. This player allows you to pause, close, and maximize the video.

  • Reposition the Mini-Player: You can drag the Mini-Player on your screen and drop it wherever you like.
  • Pause Video: Pause the video in the mini-player by tapping it and selecting the pause button.
  • Play the next video: To watch the next video in the list, tap the right arrow icon.
  • Listen to audio: To mute the video and listen to only the audio, tap the headphones icon.
  • Zoom Video: To return to the original size of the YouTube video, tap the double arrow icon.
  • Close Video: To stop the video playback and close the mini-player, tap the “X” in the upper right corner.
