“A small number of devices are unable to open the Start menu after installing updates released on June 23, 2022 or later,” the company explained in a recent update to the Windows.

“After installing KB5014668 or later updates, we've received reports that a small number of Windows devices may be unable to open the Start menu.“.

"On affected devices, clicking or selecting the Start button or using the Windows key on the keyboard may have no effect," the company said.

Microsoft has now addressed the problem using Known Issue Rollback (KIR), a Windows feature that helps roll back buggy Windows(non-security related) provided through Windows Update.

Once pushed out via KIR, the fix typically reaches all consumer and unmanaged enterprise devices within a day. Customers can also accelerate the rollout by rebooting affected Windows devices.

Group policies available for corporate customers

IT administrators must install and configure a specific KIR Group Policy associated with the Windows version of the systemsto resolve this known issue on enterprise-managed devices.

“The specific Group Policy can be found in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> KB5014668 220721_04201 Known Issue Rollback -> Windows 11 (original release),” Microsoft added.

The process required to deploy a Known Issue Rollback via Group Policy requires navigating to Local Computer Policy or Domain policy on your domain controller using the Group Policy Editor to select the version of Windows you want to target.

Details on how to deploy and configure KIR Group Policies are available on the Microsoft support website .

The issue was discovered as Microsoft is working on the final changes for this year's Windows 11 update, 22H2. The Windows update is expected to include a new Task Manager, drag-and-drop functionality for the taskbar, tabs in File Explorer, new features in the Start menu, and more. Windows 10 will likely also get its own 22H2 update, although it won't have many new features.

Finally, in the past few days, Microsoft has warned customers that printing with USB-connected printers may also have problems after installing Windows updates released since June 28.
