Foxconn Hon Hai, the Taiwanese phone maker contracted by Apple, plans to nearly double the number of employees at its Chennai factory amid higher orders from the iPhone maker, which is expected to post record numbers in 2022.
As Foxconn restarts iPhone production in China after the lockdown in Shenzhen, the company plans to expand its factory in India.
According to the Economic Times of India, Apple is the one that has received permission from the local government to do what is called “denotifying.” Foxconn’s factory in Chennai operates within a special economic zone (SEZ), which confers certain benefits, along with certain conditions.

A named area can be used for extensive production, for example, provided that this production is intended for local sale within what is called a domestic tariff area (DTA).
"A part of their facilities have been denotified to increase production, for which they need to increase their workforce," an unnamed source told the publication.

Foxconn has marked out 40 acres within its facilities for the new manufacturing facility. It is not known when the new manufacturing plant will be operational and Foxconn has not made any public comment.
Foxconn's current facility in Chennai was the subject of a shutdown imposed by both Apple and local authorities following protests over working and housing. The Economic Times reports that all worker accommodations have reopened, except for an unspecified number of hostels that the company has chosen not to open yet.
