Peloton: New integration for Apple Watch released

Peloton is making it easier for Apple Watch users to get more out of their devices with a new integration. Today, the company announced that it is rolling out to Bike, Bike Plus, and Tread.

According to their blog, Peloton’s watch app will notify users whenever they start a new class on Bike, Bike Plus, and Tread. Additionally, it will work the same way for classes started through the app. Users will also be able to log their workouts. If this feature is enabled, the Apple Watch can also be used as a heart rate monitor so that one can observe Peloton’s Strive Score feature. Strive Score is a meter that informs the user of the time they are at a certain heart rate, which will make it easier for users to import their workout logs into Activity .

However, this integration is not automatic and is activated through a setup process. First, you need to make sure that the Peloton app is on both your phone (or tablet) and your Apple Watch. Next, you need to open the Peloton app on your phone and tap the “More” tab. Select “Apple Watch,” then “Setup,” and “Connect to Health.” The Health app should then appear. Grant any permissions you want, but keep in mind that denying any measurements may affect the integration’s ability to work more efficiently. After that, return to the Peloton app and tap “Done.” And of course, when the Apple Watch app asks for permissions to send you notifications, tap “Allow.”

This may seem like a long process, but it's a standard process for integrating an app into Apple Health. We've seen similar apps before, such as Apple's GymKit, which allows users to log workouts using NFC-enabled gym equipment on the Apple Watch. The integration's ability to log workouts while you're wearing the watch is reminiscent of Apple's own Fitness Plus service

Until now, only Bike Plus supported any kind of Apple Watch integration via GymKit. However, when Peloton stopped supporting GymKit for Bootcamp workouts, there was an uproar. Technically, GymKit was unable to support Bootcamp workouts as users were alternating between cardio and strength training. However, this was a specific GymKit issue. Peloton says the new integration will allow users to track all of their workouts on any of their devices.
