Apple M1 Ultra: Review shows it on par with Threadripper 3990X

The new Apple M1 Ultra benchmark was shared by Benchleaks on Twitter. The impressive result confirms the multi-core functionality of Apple's new flagship, achieving a score of 24,055. Its performance was so good that the M1 Ultra managed to almost equal Ryzen Threadripper 3990X processor, since the difference between the two is limited to just a few units.

The M1 Ultra was just announced today, as Apple's new flagship SoC for the M1 generation. The new chip is absolutely mind-blowing, featuring two M1 Max SoCs connected together with a new interconnect that Apple calls UltraFusion. This essentially gives the M1 Ultra twice the hardware power of the M1 Max.

Specifically, the Apple M1 Ultra has 20 CPU cores, 16 of which are focused on high performance while the remaining 4 work for better efficiency. The GPU has also increased the number of cores to 64, while it is combined with a unified memory of 128 GB, which operates at an impressive 800 GBps.

The M1 Ultra's performance is quite impressive. The multi-threaded test score for this version of Geekbench 5 reached 24,055 points. Meanwhile, AMD's Threadripper 3990X with 64 Zen 2 cores is only 4.5% faster, scoring 25,133 points. This is remarkable considering the M1 Ultra only has 20 cores and its power consumption is only 60 watts according to Apple. This would make the M1 Ultra 4.7 times more efficient compared to the power-hungry 3990X with a TDP of 280 W.

However, Intel 's 16-core i9-12900K suffered a 40% loss compared to Apple's M1 Ultra. AMD's Ryzen 9 5950X suffered an even greater loss of 45%.

However, we shouldn't overlook the x86 processors that beat the M1 Ultra by 11.4% in single-thread benchmark results. However, Intel is the only winner in this area as the benchmarks show AMD's 3990X and 5950X losing to the Apple M1 Ultra by 47.8% and 6.3% respectively.

While these numbers are very impressive, they are still just estimates. Let's not forget that Geekbench 5 results don't always match real-world performance, so we should take these results at face value. We'll have a chance to see how the Apple M1 Ultra performs once the new Mac Studio is released on March 18th.
