Until now, your ability to get an external hard drive (SSD) for the PS5 has been limited to next to nothing. Fortunately, earlier today hardware vendor Seagate confirmed that the FireCuda 530 SSD “meets all PS5 SSD requirements.” That means that even with its heatsink variations, the Firecuda will fit inside the PS5’s narrow SSD slot, increasing your console’s storage by 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, or up to 4TB. Given that the PS5’s internal storage only runs on 667GB of usable space, that’s a significant increase, even with the smaller drive.
Seagate also promises some serious speed with its new SSD, claiming it will transfer data twice as fast as the previous generation of drives, reaching 7,300 MB/s. Overall, it claims you'll be able to write and erase 70% of the drive's capacity every day for five years without any serious drop in performance, which is great if you're switching games regularly.

The Firecuda 530 is set to launch in August, so there's only a month left. However, we'll give you a little rundown on the pricing – the smallest drive is priced at $140, with the largest 4TB option costing $950. It's also important to remember that while the hardware itself will be available to buy, Sony hasn't yet rolled out SSD support to the majority of users – a new software beta adds compatibility for members of the testing program, but there's no reason why everyone else will have the chance to install a bit more storage, so it may be a while before you can make your own tweaks.

While this is the first SSD to work with the PS5, the technology itself isn't exactly new. PS4 SSD options have been available for a while now.
