In October, Ryuk ransomware operators attacked Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn and the University of Vermont Health Network . Specifically, the attack took place on October 28 and caused service disruptions at both UVM Medical Center itself and other affiliated facilities.

A month later, the University of Vermont Hospital was continuing its recovery efforts from the ransomware attack that paralyzed systems .

The hospital's IT team is still working to gain access to all systems and it appears that the work will take additional time to complete.

The hospital's CEO, Dr. Stephen Leffler, announced that the ransomware attack is costing UVM Medical Center about $1.5 million per day. This cost is calculated from lost revenue and money spent on systems restoration.

According to a post published by the Associated Press, Leffler estimated that the restoration is about 70 percent complete. The hospital's CEO also said that experts are still working to determine the root cause of the attack.

“Leffler says they are still trying to pinpoint the exact root of the cyberattack, but they hope to provide more details about the investigation next week. By then, they will determine if it was a ransomware attack similar to those experienced by other hospitals around the country,” the post states.

Finally, the CEO of UVM Medical Center revealed that the malware used in the ransomware attack infected all 5,000 computers on the hospital's network. The hospital's IT staff is taking down various parts of the network during the recovery process and plans to take more steps to strengthen the security of the systems.
