Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn and the University of Vermont Health Network in Vermont appear to be the latest victims of Ryuk ransomware (in the healthcare sector).
Last week, the US warned of increased attacks on the healthcare industry in the US.
On the same day, CISA issued a public warning about US hospitals and healthcare providers that have been targeted by Ryuk ransomware.
Charles Carmakal, vice president and CTO at Mandiant, told BleepingComputer that a hacking group from Eastern Europe (known as UNC1878) is responsible for the Ryuk ransomware attacks on hundreds of hospitals.
In a new report, Check Point states that it has seen a 71% increase in attacks on US hospitals during October.
Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn attacked by Ryuk ransomware
Last week, a Wyckoff Heights employee contacted BleepingComputer and stated that the hospital had been attacked by the Ryuk ransomware.
Wyckoff Heights Medical Center is a 350-bed hospital located in Brooklyn, New York.
The employee said the hospital shut down parts of its network to prevent the ransomware from spreading, but several devices.
We do not know what consequences the attack had on the treatment of patients.
The University of Vermont Health Network wasalsoby Ryuk ransomware.
The University of Vermont Health Network was also attacked by Ryuk ransomware, affecting all hospitals in its network.
“The attack has caused a variety of issues for our partners. Staff continue to use best practices to ensure patient care. We understand the inconvenience our patients and community are experiencing and apologize. There have been some changes to patient appointments and we are working to reach out to patients who have been affected,” the University of Vermont Health Network said.
The hospitals that have been affected are:
- Alice Hyde Medical Center – Malone, NY
- Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital – Plattsburgh, NY
- Elizabethtown Community Hospital – Elizabethtown, NY
- Porter Medical Center – Middlebury, VT
- UVMHN Home Health and Hospice
- UVM Medical Center – Burlington, VT
There is also cooperation with the FBI to investigate the Ryuk ransomware attack.
