Apple Introduces New USB-C Diagnostic Tool. See the New Features: Apple is finally bringing the new internal USB-C Diagnostic Tool, as a successor to the existing Serial Number Reader.
The new tool can be used both to get the serial number of a device directly from the motherboard, but also to check the power of the device itself, something we haven't seen before.
Until recently, only a Lightning version, but the images now show Apple's new USB-C, also known as "ChimpSWD." The new tool was built to connect to the iPad Pro series, which has had USB-C ports since 2018.
In a post by Giulio Zompetti on Twitter, we see the leaked information even more clearly: "Apple is adding a new member to its family. We're talking about the SNR successor. Let me introduce you to UTD, USB-C Diagnostic Tool, known to most as 'ChimpSW'."
According to the data, it seems that the specialist will have to connect the UDT to the HDI Mac. The way to do this is by using the appropriate cable, micro USB to USB-C or A, to the other end of the intended device. When the tool is properly used, it will retrieve the diagnostic information.
Apple has also informed service providers that the Apple Service Toolkit 2 diagnostic system has been updated to support reading HDI serial numbers. The new feature is currently only available for the first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro and the third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, using the new USB-C Diagnostic Tool.
In the near future, the new, much-discussed feature will also become available for the latest generations of 11-inch and 12.9-inch models.
