Facebook announced today that it plans to release a new tool in 2020 that will allow Facebook users to transfer their photos and videos from Facebook to Google Photos.
The tool is already live in Ireland, and will be rolled out to everyone from early 2020, according to the company.

The upcoming Facebook to Google photo transfer tool is the company's first product based on the Data Transfer Project (DTP) framework.
The Data Transfer Project is an open standard for data organization that helps users transfer their information from one platform to another.

The program was founded in 2017 and officially announced in July 2018. Founding members included Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter. Apple joined the project a few months later.
The DTP code for exporting and transferring content in DTP format (text, settings, photos, videos) is open-source and hosted on GitHub in the hope that other platforms will adopt it.
To help companies get started, DTP founding members have created extensions to host an import/export API for common hosting platforms like Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure.
It remains to be seen what the tools are in practice.
