Military dogs are one of the key assets of the U.S. military, but they are exposed to many dangers. In addition to the obvious dangers they face, military dogs are at risk of temporary and permanent hearing loss. Whether during training, during transport (such as helicopter flights), or in real-world situations, the dogs can be exposed to “high decibel noise,” according to an Army statement.
In an effort to solve this problem, an innovative Army program developed new gear designed to protect the ears of military dogs.
Zeteo Tech partnered with retired Navy Captain Pete Scheifele, who is also a professor at the University of Cincinnati and an expert on the development of the CAIN Animal Acoustic Protection System ( CAPS )
“CAPS uses lightweight, highly acoustically absorbing materials to block unwanted sounds,” the lab said in a statement. “Unlike conventional dog hearing protection, this solution is made of flexible materials that conform to the unique shape of a dog. This flexibility ensures a proper seal around the ear and maximum sound reduction.”
The system uses headgear to evenly distribute the pressure needed to maintain hearing protection.
"It is also compatible with other tools used by military dogs, such as goggles," said the CDDC Army Research Laboratory.
The researchers found that CAPS resulted in a significant reduction in the dogs' hearing loss during helicopter operations.
“Even a short helicopter can affect a dog’s hearing, resulting in impaired performance and an inability to hear the operator’s commands that can hinder the mission,” said Stephen Lee, Ph.D., senior scientist at the Army Research Office. “This new technology protects the dog while on missions and could extend its working life.”
