Xiaomi has unveiled a new phone called the Mi Mix Alpha, which is the first Android phone where the screen literally wraps around its body.
The company says that the screen-to-body ratio is 180.6% and the parts not covered by the screen are the top and bottom of the phone, as well as a thin column that carries the cameras.
The Mi Mix Alpha is made of aviation titanium, which is obviously lighter than stainless steel. Its main feature is its screen, which wraps around the entire phone. It also has a 108-megapixel camera that can take photos with a resolution of 12,032 x 9,024 pixels, as well as a second 20-megapixel wide-angle camera.
It doesn't have the typical front-facing camera (the selfie camera), because it simply doesn't need it, since the rear camera is on a screen and you can easily turn the phone 180 degrees and take the selfie you want.
Since the phone is almost all one giant screen, it lacks the classic physical buttons (apart from the power button at the top) and instead has pressure-sensitive sides. The rest of its goodies are hidden under the screen, like the fingerprint reader and an acoustic technology that replaces the typical earpiece and speaker.
Inside the Mi Mix Alpha you'll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. It supports 5G and comes with a 4,050mAh battery. Xiaomi says the phone is already in "small-scale production" and will start shipping in December. It's still unclear whether it will be available outside of China.
Its starting price is currently expected to be 19,999 yuan (or about $2,810). Although Xiaomi says the screen will come with a hard layer of protection, we don't want to think about what will happen if it falls out of your hands.
