Adam Conrad has announced the release of the first beta of the upcoming Ubuntu 18.10, codenamed “Cosmic Cuttlefish”. The first beta is available for anyone who wants to try out Canonical’s upcoming operating system.

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the final beta release of Ubuntu 18.10 Desktop, Server, and Cloud products.
Here is the standard release announcement as posted on the ubuntu-announce mailing list.
Ubuntu 18.10 beta brings the latest GNU/Linux applications. It uses the latest Linux 4.18, the GNOME 3.30 desktop environment, and features updated applications (Firefox 62.0 and LibreOffice 6.1).
The release notes are brief, not containing many details, but they do document a known issue:
Booting live images for installing Ubuntu in VirtualBox may fail on some flavors and versions of VirtualBox. If booting the live session fails, you will need to enable “nomodeset” via the initial boot menu.
