Ubuntu 18.04 LTS: Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth today revealed the codename for the next LTS distribution of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, will be released in late April 2018.
LTS, for those who don't know, comes from long-term support and refers to a type of special software or operating system releases that are designed to be supported for a longer period of time.
In keeping with the tradition of naming upcoming Ubuntu releases, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth welcomed the new Ubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) distribution with a post on his personal blog , congratulating everyone involved in its development and at the same time announcing the release of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which he named “Bionic Beaver.” “Our mascot is a mammal known for its energy, its work in nature and its expertise. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver,” wrote Mark Shuttleworth.
Mark Shuttleworth did not reveal what the upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will bring, other than that there will be more emphasis on the Ubuntu Snappy Core system for IoT (Internet of Things) devices. The development schedule was also published, which states that the release date of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be April 26, 2018.
Development begins in two days from today, on October 26th. From that date onwards, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS “Bionic Beaver” will follow the same path as its predecessors. This means that two Alpha and two Beta releases will be released during the six-month development cycle.
According to the release schedule, the first Alpha version is expected on January 4, 2018, and the second should be released on February 1, but only for the opt-in flavors.
On March 8th, we will have the first beta release and the Final Beta will be released on April 5th, 2018.
