According to a report from Motherboard, employees at Snap, the company behind Snapchat, are using a tool called 'SnapLion' to access users' snaps without their consent. Snaps are photos that disappear after a period of time. However, employees can access these photos thanks to this tool. However, this means that users' privacy is being violated
SnapLion is essentially an internal tool used by the company, designed for security reasons. Its goal is to protect Snapchat users. The tool is used by authorities to gather information and often helps catch criminals.
However, it is not only used by law enforcement agencies. Company employees can use it freely. In fact, it sometimes helps them reset passwords to accounts that have been hacked.
After the report was published by Motherboard, some employees came forward to confirm the fact. According to them, the company has a department called “Customer Ops.” Employees who work there have access to SnapLion. SnapLion gives access to data such as: a user’s phone number, snaps, locations, messages, and metadata.
A Snap employee, who did not want to give his name, confirmed that the tool has been abused several times.
Snapchat has a data protection feature (Logging)
Logging is used to protect user data, reducing the chances of misuse. It is used to prevent unauthorized access to user data. However, the same employee stated that “logging is not perfect,” implying that it can be circumvented and does not effectively protect user data.
In fact, there are many companies that use tools, like SnapLion, to monitor what is happening on their platform. These tools are designed to protect users from any breach, but also to be used by authorities to combat illegal activities and catch fraudsters.
In addition to Snap, there are other major companies that have been accused of spying on their users. Examples include Facebook and Google. Facebook has been accused several times of leaking information about its users. In fact, it has fired employees who were spying on people using a tool similar to SnapLion.
