Since app stores took over the public, the Apple App Store has arguably been the safest place to find apps without worrying about them containing malware. However, a fake Amazon Alexa installer app has managed to make its way into the App Store , even being listed in the “Top Free” section.
According to a new report from 9to5Mac, a fake Amazon Alexa setup app called 'Setup For Amazon Alexa' was ranked 6th in the Utilities category on the App Store. Furthermore, the app was able to garner thousands of reviews, mostly with five-star ratings.
The fake app claimed to be a guide that would help users set up Amazon Alexa devices, along with various commands, however, it actually didn't help at all.
The popularity gained by the fake app is attributed to the increase in sales of Amazon Alexa devices, providing an opportunity for scammers to trick users.
While the app was fake, it wasn't involved in anything malicious, such as extracting important information from users. Furthermore, the app didn't try to take money from users.
The developer of “Setup For Amazon Alexa” has created other apps in the Apple app store, such as “Marketplace – Buy \ Sell” and “Any Font for Instagram”.
After the fraud was discovered, the app is no longer available in the App Store.
