Piriform released the updated version of CCleaner 5.50 this week, adding a new option to it. Now users will be able to block updates to the program.
In September, users of the program complained about the way the application worked. While there was an option to NOT automatically check for, download, and install CCleaner updates, the application continued to check for and install the latest versions, regardless of the settings users had set.
Piriform responded to these complaints by saying that it was forced to make this move for legal reasons.
With the release of CCleaner 5.50, in the program's Update settings there is again the option to not automatically update, with the difference that this time, it works!
In the update settings there are now the options “Important updates” and “Product Updates”.
CCleaner's Important Updates are related to the correct operation of the program. By default, the program installs them automatically, without displaying any notification to the user. Piriform itself suggests that users continue to install Important Updates automatically, as in the event that the way a program operates (e.g. Google Chrome or Firefox) changes and CCleaner tries to clean the remnants (such as history or Cookies), there is a possibility that the browser profile may be corrupted.
As for Product Updates, they refer to updates that contain new cleaning rules and changes to existing rules. The automatic updates option is not available for free users, but only for upgraded users.
Finally, when a user upgrades from free to upgraded user, the program will ask how they want updates to be made.
