They say that Mac computers don't require antivirus, due to the security features and limitations included in macOS, but recent cyberattacks show us otherwise.
And now, a study conducted by German virus detection institute AV-TEST has helped determine which of these security products developed for macOS can actually block existing threats.
In the case of home users, AV-TEST evaluated eight different security solutions, of which at least four received the maximum result by earning 6/6 points in the three protection, performance and usability tests.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, Intego VirusBarrier, Symantec Norton Security, and Trend Micro Antivirus also achieved maximum scores in this survey. Somewhat surprisingly, Kaspersky lost 0.5 points in performance tests to achieve an overall score of 17.5 points.
Avira Antivirus Pro was one point behind with 16.5 points, while Avast Security and F-Secure Safe were the last products in the rankings with 16 and 15.5 points, respectively.
In terms of malware detection rates, six of the eight security products tested achieved a 100% score. Avira Antivirus Pro remained at 98.4%, while F-Secure Safe received the lowest score at 96.4%.
For business users, three of the four products received the top score, namely Bitdefender Endpoint Security for Mac, McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac, and SentinelOne Next Generation Endpoint Security. Sophos' Central Endpoint wasn't far behind with a final score of 17 points, after losing 1 point in the performance tests.
Again, Bitdefender and Sophos topped the charts for malware detection rates, while McAfee was third with a near-maximum score of 99.8%. SentinelOne's product was fourth with 99%.
The research was conducted on MacOS High Sierra and was conducted in two different locations in April and May using the latest versions of the products tested at the time of the evaluation.
