Microsoft's AI digital assistant, Cortana, is now available in Skype, according to the company's announcement.
Cortana on Skype can either chat with you, like you would with any friend, or invite you to chat to handle tasks like scheduling events, finding nearby restaurants, or sharing movie reviews from IMDB.
Cortana for Skype will begin rolling out today to iOS and Android users in the United States, according to a blog post from the company. The company didn't say when other countries will get the new feature, but I'd imagine it will be soon after the U.S. trial.
Microsoft's digital assistant will appear as a contact in every Skype user's contact list. It will work just like it does on desktop, in one-on-one (AI) "conversations": Ask for things like directions or the weather forecast, and Cortana will give you answers via visual cards.
In addition to making restaurant reservations, Cortana on Skype will be able to help with suggested responses like “I’m fine” when someone asks “How are you?” or “Create a reminder” when you’re planning something with your friends. The reminders will then be sent to other devices you’ve allowed to use Cortana.
Cortana in Skype will not work on voice or video calls.
When the digital assistant launches in Skype, we'll see many features that will resemble Facebook Messenger's intelligent assistant M, and it will work in much the same way that Google's assistant works in the lesser-known chat app Allo. In either case, the AI digital assistant will listen to the words used in your conversation to predict the needs of a user or group of users.
