“Safespaces” the first open source VR Desktop Environment for Linux

LinuxWhen we think of VR, our minds usually go to Google Daydream and other popular names. But VR has also found its way onto Linux. However, people's experience with things like SteamVR isn't as great.

But what if you could get a VR Desktop Environment for Linux with virtual reality? The people who created the Arcan display server have now come up with something new: Safespaces.

This is a 3D / VR Desktop Environment under construction. It is designed to work with the Arcan display server. You can see it in action with an OpenHMD compatible VR headset.

According to a blog post, Safespaces is designed in such a way that the code can be reused with minimal changes. The developers assure us that they are not imitating or repeating the design model of Windows, Android, Xorg, etc.

Details of the open-source Desktop Environment VR are available on GitHub. The developers warn that when testing the prototype project, you may feel dizzy. Literally!

The idea of using a Linux desktop in VR sounds great. But in reality, it's going to be about a lot more than just playing games and watching interesting videos. It would be interesting to see how people manage to use their keyboard while wearing a VR headset, unless someone is trained in the blind system.
