Over the past decade, the VPN service market has grown rapidly. There are many reputable services that offer security and reliability. PIA is one such well-known VPN provider that found itself at number 2 on the list of best VPN services.
PIA has taken a step forward to gain the trust of more users. The company announced that it has started the process of open-sourcing their software. Over the next six months, PIA will release the source code of all client-side applications, extensions, and libraries.
Previously, customers who didn't want to use their proprietary app had the option to use the OpenVPN gateway. Now with open source, privacy advocates will have the option to look into their app and see how things work.
Additionally, as is the case in the open source community, the community can take the code, reuse it for personal applications, or help PIA improve it.
As of today, PIA has first shared the code for its Chrome extension that allows users to access PIA proxies through their web browser. It also comes with features like disabling the camera, microphone, flash, etc.
As mentioned above, the company plans to release all client-side code in an open version and hopes to get feedback.
