Huawei has already announced that its primary goal is to surpass Apple in smartphone sales worldwide, and as it turns out, the Chinese company has achieved its goal. Our data comes from research firm Counterpoint Research.
Although no details have been given on units sold, a chart released by Counterpoint shows that both Huawei and Apple have around 12% of the market share, with a huge growth rate for the Chinese company in recent months.
Huawei's overtaking of Apple is not that surprising, given the lack of new iPhone models, but also the improvements that the Chinese company has presented in its models. Of course, the biggest challenge right now is to maintain this second place after the release of the iPhone 8 next month.
“It is a significant milestone for Huawei, the largest Chinese smartphone brand with an ever-growing global presence.
"Huawei's recent global success can be attributed to its continued investment in R&D and manufacturing, combined with aggressive marketing and channel expansion," said Peter Richardson, director of Counterpoint Research.
The bad news for Huawei is that the company does not have a model in the top 10 smartphones in global market share.
Apple is still the clear leader, as the iPhone 7 leads the race with a 4% share, followed by the iPhone 7 Plus at 2.9% and the Oppo R11 at 2.1%. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is fifth with 1.8%, while Apple is again quite close with another model, this time the iPhone 6, which continues to have a market share that reaches 1.6%.
Counterpoint says this is because Huawei has many models on the market without a high-end device, and that this could change very soon with the release of the Mate 10.
