The built-in command prompt in Windows hasn't changed at all for a very long time. It looks like it will in the upcoming Windows 10, as Microsoft announced yet another improvement, the addition of colors to cmd.exe.
According to Microsoft, the classic color scheme has visibility issues due to the dark colors used in the command prompt window. These colors are not suitable for modern bright IPS and TFT LCD monitors with high screen resolutions. The old application was created for old CRT monitors.
In the new version of Windows 10, Microsoft updated the Win32 console, which is the core technology that powers both the Command Prompt and PowerShell, to fully support RGB colors with 24-bit colors.
To try out the new feature, you'll need to install the latest version of Windows 10 Insider Preview, Build 16257.
If you're not crazy about the idea of installing a beta build, you'll have to wait until September when the "final" version of the upgraded operating system will be released.
More details about this change can be found in the official announcement.
