We already know that LG's upcoming G6 flagships will feature a massive, 18:9, 2,880x1,440-pixel display. But what do users actually gain from this unusual aspect ratio?
The answer is pretty trivial: They'll obviously have more space. A short trailer, released by LG Mobile on Wednesday, showcases some of its benefits.
First, it can display two squares on top of each other (18/9 = 2, duh), which opens the door for a nice, clean UI. It's also great for multitasking, which, while more than unheard of for smartphones ,could really benefit from a larger screen.
We don't see much multitasking in the video, but LG explained how it could work in a press release. "From within the calendar app, turning the G6 horizontally will display the calendar in the left pane, while a detailed schedule will appear on the right," the company said.
The camera app will also benefit. Thanks to the extra space, users will be able to take and review photos at the same time. LG's camera app will also have a square camera mode, specifically designed for Instagram's 1:1 photos.
Overall, LG hopes the new display will “start an era of smartphones with 18:9 aspect ratios.” With all the rumors of larger displays from both Samsung and Apple’s upcoming flagships, it’s hard to argue with that. However, there’s still not much information on the exact aspect ratio these new phones will have.
