Google announced last fall that the Pixel and Pixel XL would be the first devices to feature Google Assistant. Now, Google's virtual assistant is available on Pixel smartphones and a number of other products from the company .
It seems that Google plans to bring Google Assistant to other smartphones besides Pixel very soon. For example, you can already activate Google Assistant on a Nexus 6P smartphone.
If you have a smartphone other than Pixel, you can activate the virtual assistant in the new Google app, Google app v6.13 alpha. Because this is an early version of the upcoming update, Google app v6.13 alpha is buggy and may crash on some screens. Google Assistant is activated by holding down the home button, just like you access Now on Tap.
The alpha build could mean two things. One version claims that it is proof that Google will bring Google Assistant to other smartphones beyond Pixel. The second claims that this feature was integrated purely for testing purposes and does not confirm any new changes. At the moment, we are not in a position to draw any conclusions.
Additionally, it should be noted that just because Google Assistant worked on the Nexus 6S doesn't mean it will work on other devices.
Google's new app features support for payments and delivery information to be used in conjunction with Google Assistant. It also comes with a new search page and a lite mode that can be disabled in account settings.
