The Moto Z smartphones, along with the Moto Mods, have been a huge success for Motorola. It seems that modular smartphones are gaining traction in the market, so Motorola plans to launch at least a dozen Moto Mods per year.
A new Moto Mod is already under construction as part of the “Transform the Smartphone” challenge that allows independent creators to produce a prototype Moto Mod to be sold by Verizon.
The new Moto Mod, which will be called the Ultimate Moto Z Mod, is a bit thicker than a regular Moto case at just 3mm thick. It's being funded by IndieGoGo and will provide a lot of extra features to the phone, according to 9to5Google.
The Moto Mod must be attached to the back of the smartphone in order to work. It adds wireless charging, which is only available through certain Moto Z battery mods.
The Moto Mod also gives the ability to transmit IR signals from the Moto Z phone, allowing users to control TVs, sound systems, and other devices simply by using their smartphones.
The Ultimate Moto Z Mod has all the makings to be a hugely successful move by the company given its affordable price and the fact that it is the thinnest of all the Moto Mods, except of course for its case, which doesn't seem to offer much in terms of functionality for the phone.
This project is estimated to be completed in November 2017, with Motorola employees claiming that Moto Mods will be able to be installed on any future device from the company.
