If you use the Spotify desktop app to listen to music, it would be a good idea to temporarily change your habit and listen to your favorite music from the Web or from a Spotify app for mobile devices.
Several subscribers have reported that the service's streaming apps for Mac, Windows, and Linux write hundreds of gigabytes of data to users' hard drives every day, even when the software is idle and supposedly not storing locally, according to Ars Technica.
It's not clear why this is happening, but you should definitely avoid using the Spotify desktop app for now, because writing data to your hard drive too frequently can shorten its lifespan.
Even SSDs, which have no moving parts, have a limited number of read-write cycles, and the unnecessary writes that Spotify makes with tons of data can cause a decrease in their performance.
Spotify, in a statement to Ars Technica, said it fixed the issue with version 1.0.42, which will be released soon if it's not already rolling out to all users.
