Opera: Edge's energy efficiency benchmarks invalidated

Tests published by Microsoft a few days ago showed that using the Edge browser on Windows 10 provides longer battery life on the device. The results showed a clear superiority of Microsoft's browser over all its rivals, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera.Opera Browser

From the first publication here on iGuRu.gr, we mentioned that the tests were carried out by Microsoft itself and we doubted their objectivity.

Were we right?

Opera is a company that has invested heavily in battery-saving technologies for its browser, and that's why it decided to do its own tests to see if Microsoft's new browser is indeed the most energy-efficient.

Tests have proven that it is not.

“The dev version of Opera (39.0.2248.0) with native ad blocker and power saving technology was able to run 22% longer than Microsoft Edge (version 25.10586.0.0) on a Windows 10, 64-bit laptop, and 35% longer than the latest version of Google Chrome (51.0.2704.103),” the tests show.

While Microsoft hasn't provided the exact methodology it used to determine the browsers' power consumption, Opera did provide more details and explained that what it did was "browse a series of popular websites where automation simulates interaction with the website, bringing the method closer to what we expect from a normal browsing session on such a page."

Opera's new battery saving feature, which helps reduce the energy required to browse the web, applies a series of optimizations to the software in order to improve battery life.

These include reducing activity in background tabs, automatically pausing unused plug-ins, reducing the frame rate to 30 fps, stopping animations in browser themes, and waking the CPU less frequently.

Of course, if Google decides to conduct its own tests, we will see Chrome as the winner.
