What is sxolinux?

From the official page:

  • Σχολινώξ (or sxolinux) is a free and open-source Linux operating system for students. It consists mostly of free software and is based on Ubuntu Linux , which we modify (through a process called remastering) with extra software packages, for the needs of students, as well as a different graphic theme, icons and of course logos, to suit the "audience" of the distribution.
  • We make 2 slightly different versions of Scholinux:
    • The "normal" Scholinux for high school students
    • Scholinux Junior for elementary school students.
  • Scholinux and Scholinux Junior are Live DVDs with installation capability. This means that Scholinux runs "live" from a DVD, without having to install it directly on your hard drive. If you like it and want to take advantage of all its features, then you can install it with a very simple and automated process.
  • Scholinux, due to its nature, namely the existence of user rights, different software management, free educational applications and, most importantly, the collaborative development model it suggests to children, is ideal for students as it combines:
    • security, i.e. freedom from viruses and malware,
    • proper use of the computer's capabilities,
    • learning a different model of knowledge building (constructive-collaborative), which cannot exist in proprietary operating systems (see Windows).
    • Zero cost. You don't pay anything for Sxolinux .
    • dozens of educational apps and books

What we want to do:

  • Let's create a friendly Linux distribution for primary and secondary school students with all the textbooks in PDF format and all the educational software of the Pedagogical Institute, for which there is a repository for Ubuntu distributions .
  • Let's support as many children as possible who use Scholinux through our forum, so that they can solve their problems, and if possible, learn and love Free Software.

What we don't want:

  • We do not aim for pre-installations on laptops nor for "negotiations" with ministries, shops, etc. We do what we like, amateurishly in the romantic sense, that is, we do not "sell" anything nor "produce" anything.

However, thanks to the work of ordinary users, sxolinux has also found its way into school labs and school libraries.

At the same time, the humble Linux has even managed to keep us busy from time to time 🙂

To try out or install Sxolinux, you need to download an "image" file with the .iso extension, which you will "burn" to a blank DVD using the Burn Image process (there will probably be such a function in the CD/DVD burning application you are using). Then restart your computer. Sxolinux will start automatically!

Acknowledgements: The Scholinux ISO is hosted on the servers of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). We would like to thank its admins for providing the space and bandwidth!

Download Scholinux (for High School) The Scholinux ISO is 2.4GB and you can download it from here:

Don't forget to check the validity of the ISO you downloaded by comparing it with the md5 file (with the command e.g. md5sum -c sxolinux-2009.1.iso.md5)

Download Scholinux Junior 2009.1 (for Elementary)
The ISO of the Junior version of Scholinux 2009.1 is 4GB and you can download it from here:

https://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/sxolinux/sxolinux-junior.iso

Again, don't forget to check the validity of the Sxolinux Junior ISO by comparing it with the MD5 file.
