VivaLnk Unlocking a mobile phone via a digital tattoo

VivaLnk: "Smart" portable devices have long been established, forming an integral part of everyday life, while wearables are following a slower than expected, but steadily upward, path.

The company VivaLnk, in collaboration with Google's ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects) group, is bringing these two worlds together – at least, as far as Motorola's Moto X smartphone is concerned – with the Digital Tattoo, which, as the company claims, is the simplest way to "unlock" your phone, since "re-entering your PIN is outdated.".

The tattoo is the size of a coin, uses NFC (Near Field Communication) technology and is recommended to be worn on the wrist, for ease of use.

After placing and synchronizing the tattoo with the mobile phone, a light touch of the device on it is enough to "unlock" it.

“Put it on and go. The Digital Tattoo will last for about five days (depending on skin and activity levels), withstanding showers, swimming, exercise and anything else you can imagine,” claims VivaLnk – which calls the technology it has developed “eSkin” – on its website.

A Digital Tattoo “pack” includes 10 tattoos—enough for over a month. Each one syncs with the Moto X’s NFC unlock feature. “Think of it as your first step toward a wearable future,” the company urges.

Regarding its exact dimensions, its diameter is 24.13 mm, its thickness is 160 μm. Its range is 10 mm. The company assures that it is completely safe for the skin, as medical adhesives are used and extensive biocompatibility tests have been carried out. However, in case of irritation or discomfort, it is recommended to immediately peel it off (just like a band-aid) and stop using it.

Each Moto X can use up to five Digital Tattoos, and it's possible to connect more than one device to the same tattoo. While only one design (vortex) is currently available, the company notes that more are in the works.

A pack of ten tattoos can be ordered through the company's website for $9.99. According to the company, it is looking to expand its compatibility so that it can work with other devices and future versions of Android.
