DBA Press and the Center for Media and Democracy have released FBI files related to the hacktivist group LulzSec. The heavily redacted files were released by the FBI on December 6, 2013, in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed on August 9, 2013.
Highlights of the files released include:
- – Discussions by hacktivist whistleblower Sabu about Backtrace Security, a spin-off group of Anonymous, which had an opposing view to the political activities of both Anonymous and LulzSec.
One of Backtrace Security's goals was to track down Lulzsec members and shut down their operations.
- – Reference details for the arrest of the later informant Hector Xavier Monsegur. Known as “Sabu”, Monsegur was arrested by federal agents in Albany, New York in June 2011. The files have been heavily redacted, but Monsegur is referred to as a trusted FBI “Confidential Human Source” (CHS) in New York.
The most visible result of Monsegur’s “work” for the FBI was the arrest and conviction of Jeremy Hammond. Hammond was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in federal prison in November for his role in the hacking and leaking of files from the private security/intelligence firm, Strategic Forecasting (Stratfor).
