Microsoft announced that it will issue 11 security patches for the month of December, pushing the total number of patches to 106 for the entire year of 2013.

Mr. Wolfgang Kandek of the website Qualys, who analyzed the number of security bulletins from Microsoft in recent years, said that the total number increased from the 83 issued in 2012, which means that Redmond paid a little more attention to security vulnerabilities this year.

"With the December patches, the total number of security bulletins for 2013 stands at 106, up significantly from last year's count of 83, but about the same as 2011 (100 bulletins) and 2010 (106 bulletins).  Microsoft has also maintained a steady stream of bulletin releases, starting in 2012 with an average of just under 9 bulletins per month, compared to the more explosive bimonthly releases of previous years," he said.

While many would think that an increasing number of security bulletins is also an indication that software products are becoming more vulnerable to attacks, it is also an indication that Microsoft is now moving forward with patching bugs much more quickly, spending money to pay much closer attention to the overall security of its software.
