SOPA has arrived in Russia

Russia censorshipWhile the whole world is trying to stop the SOPA , Russia is looking at anti-piracy legislation with a positive eye since soon, pirate websites will be blocked by ISPs for copyright infringement.

The Russian government has drafted a bill that proposes very harsh measures for copyright violators. The bill has been passed and will soon be implemented, as TorrentFreak reports.

Under the law, copyright holders can file lawsuits against websites that violate the law, forcing them to remove the infringing content or links to it within 72 hours.
Failure to comply with the law could result in ISPs completely blocking the website until the case is resolved.

“This approach is technically illiterate and jeopardizes even the existence of search engines, as well as many Internet services. This bill goes against the logic of the Internet and will hurt everyone – not only Internet users and website owners, but also the Rightholders themselves,” said a spokesperson for Yandex, (the local search engine, equivalent to Google).

The law will enter into force on August 1 if approved by all decision-making bodies.
