We were very pleased to find out today that the voice-guided navigation service added to Google Maps now supports Greece.
Google Maps Navigation (Beta) is supported by smartphones running iOS 5.1 (or above). It is an online navigation system or 'satnav' system that provides voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions. This means that the user no longer needs to look at the phone's screen to follow the route, but simply listens to the instructions.
A prerequisite is that the smartphone is connected to the internet so that the device can access the maps and driving instructions. The tool is regularly updated with the latest data from Google Maps, which means that users do not need to purchase updated maps or update their devices.
Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up as a web-based GPS system that allows users to search for locations of interest. In addition to searching for addresses, Google Maps Navigation also allows users to search for business addresses by simply entering a business name. The Navigation app (Beta) features a variety of features, including recognizing landmarks along the route, such as gas stations, restaurants, and parking lots.
Beyond voice-guided, turn-by-turn directions, Google Maps Navigation (Beta) has many benefits, including:
- Ease of use: Google finds your destination: Just type in your destination and Google Maps Navigation (Beta) finds it, just like when you search on Google Maps. You don't need to know the address. Spelling errors are corrected, and ambiguous questions show multiple results so the user can choose the right one.
- It’s always up to date: No need for constant updates – you always have access to the latest maps and businesses. By being connected to the internet you always have access to the latest Google Maps data. You’ll never need to purchase upgraded maps or update your device.
- It's free with your smartphone: Like Google Maps, the Navigation (Beta) app is free. (Note: Data plan charges for internet connectivity still apply.).
Google Maps Navigation (Beta) for mobile comes after a series of Google products that have been made available in the country, including the Transit service.
