Facebook Messenger source code reveals its hidden "rooms"
Facebook Messenger app could soon be getting a feature called Rooms, according to speculation. A developer has discovered references to Rooms within existing Facebook source code, which would allow friends and strangers to chat via Facebook Messenger’s public group, TechCrunch reports.
TechCrunch found references to public Chats in Messenger’s code, which includes a logo and description of the service. The hidden code says, “Rooms are for public conversations about topics and interests. Each Room has a shareable link so anyone on Messenger can join the conversation.”
TechCrunch also reported that some of its readers were able to start a chat room with two friends and strangers, with an admin screen showing some of the features currently available.
The social media giant initially declined to comment on Rooms. However, after being sent screenshots of code showing how users are able to join Rooms and chat using Messenger features and interfaces, Facebook said, “We often do small tests — nothing more than that.”
The idea of chatrooms is nothing new. This is something Facebook tried again in 2014, which was discontinued in 2015, since it did not get much response. The Rooms app allows users to talk to others who share the same interests as them, but with complete anonymity.
We'll have to wait and see if Facebook will finally open up Rooms for Messenger in the near future.
