Linux Mint Website Hacked!

Why?

Last night, unknown hackers or a group of hackers managed to hack the Linux Mint website and replace the site's download links that referred to one of their services with malicious ISO images for Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon Edition.

Who was affected?

As far as the Linux Mint team is aware, this issue only affects one edition, and that is Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon edition.

It happened last night, so the issue affects those who downloaded the aforementioned version of Linux Mint on February 20th.

However, if you downloaded the Cinnamon edition before February 20th, this issue does not affect you. Similarly, if you downloaded any other edition including Mint 17.3 Cinnamon via Torrent or a direct HTTP link, you are also not affected.

How you can protect your Linux machine:

Users with the ISO image can check its signature to make sure it is valid.

To check if you have downloaded the malicious file, you can compare the MD5 signature with that of the official versions, included in Lefebvre's blog post.

If you have been affected, we advise you to follow the steps below:

  • Take your computer offline.
  • Backup all your personal data.
  • Reinstall the operating system (with a clean ISO).
  • Change your passwords on sensitive websites and emails.
