The same good hackers, who previously hacked more than 10,000 routers to make them more secure, have once again made headlines for breaching more than 70,000 home routers, and -obviously- forcing their owners to insure themselves against the security flaws their machines suffered from and weak passwords.
Just like the infamous hacking group Lizard Squad, the group of white hat hackers, known as the White Team, is building a massive botnet consisting of hundreds of home routers, but for a good cause.
The hacking group Lizard Squad, the group responsible for the outage of Sony PlayStation Network and Microsoft Xbox Live, uses its botnets to carry out DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks against targeted websites with the aim of flooding them with traffic and knocking them offline.

Hacking Routers for… security!
Countering the malicious activity of Lizard Squad, the White Team of good hackers has built its own peer-to-peer botnet that infects routers in order to close their vulnerabilities: such as:
- Weak default passwords
- DNS poisoning
- Unauthorized access (backdoor)
- Disabled firewalls
Their malware, called “Linux.Wifatch” also known as “Wifatch” and used by this group since last year, is still being updated and is open-sourced available on Github.
The malware, first discovered in November 2014 by an independent malware researcher, “Loot Myself,” has been analyzed by Symantec over the past year, and now includes several programs to remove other malicious software and backdoors already present on a system.
