Microsoft requested removal of user email from Windows 10 Login Screen

“Remove the user email from the login screen, it is private information”

Many believe that Windows 10 has a privacy issue because a number of its built-in services are used to collect and transmit your data to Microsoft, but that's not the only way the new operating system could put your data at risk.

For example, the Login Screen of your Windows 10 computer shows not only your profile picture and username, but also your email address, which for some users is a violation of privacy.

So, as a result, posts on Windows 10 feedback are asking the company to update the operating system and remove the email address from the sign-in screen, because otherwise, anyone can see it and use it for all kinds of malicious purposes.

“Stop displaying my email address on the Login Screen, please,” one suggestion read. “Please remove the user’s email from the Login Screen. It’s private information,” another added.

In Windows, unless you use a local account, an email is required to log in to the operating system and authenticate to all Microsoft services, such as the store, OneDrive, OneNote, and all others.

User accounts for the win

So, if you don't like using a Microsoft account and exposing your email address, you can always opt for a local account, which doesn't require any information. Of course, you lose out on some services and app updates, but it's the easiest solution to what appears to be a privacy issue.

Microsoft hasn't responded to these suggestions from Feedback app users, but designing an option to hide the email or allow account owners to decide whether they want it to appear or not shouldn't be too difficult.

The next major update for Windows 10 is expected to debut sometime in the next two months, so this is pretty much the best time for Microsoft to make such changes.
