The dream is coming true for many Playstation 4 users after a hacker claims to have developed a jailbreak for the popular armored console.
The Playstation 4 is considered one of the most protected platforms since until now it was impossible to run pirated games, but a hacker who calls himself "CTurt" claimed to have developed a fully jailbroken version of the console with the help of a kernel exploit he had previously created.
CTurt used the PlayStation 4 v1.76 hack to inject malicious code into the PS4 and take full control of the platform. The hacker wrote on Twitter:
"Just broke WebKit process out of a FreeBSD jail (cred->cr_prison = &prison0). Guess you could say the PS4 is now officially "jailbroken" :P"
According to the message above, so far it only works for firmware version 1.76, but experts say it can be modified to work on newer versions.
How does it work?
According to the hacker, the jailbreak allows the Playstation 4's RAM to be dumbed down by other processes and allows the installation of custom firmware which can be exploited by hackers to run homebrew applications that are normally not allowed by the security restriction implemented by Sony.
While it could take time for Cturt and other hackers to develop custom firmware and the method to load it onto a video game console, it should be noted that the exploit could be used to run pirated software on the console, reports techtimes.com.
If this news is indeed confirmed, we will have a big change in the gaming market. But what will be Sony's response? Apparently the company will analyze the exploit in order to find the vulnerabilities exploited by the hacker and fix them for the next version of the PS4.
