Apple: Acquires Israeli start-up LinX
Apple has acquired an Israeli startup that has developed technology that it claims brings the quality of bulky DSLR-style cameras to smartphones and tablets. The company is called LinX Imaging, and the price the American giant reportedly paid is $20 million .
Linx manufactures cameras that, as it claims, set new limits on the quality parameters of taking photos, namely in low light conditions, in correcting underexposed and overexposed shots with the so-called HDR, in changing the focus point, in color rendering, in shutter speed, and more.
Most importantly, however, Linx is making cameras significantly smaller than anything else on the market today, with the expectation that it will be able to pave the way for "DSLR-level shooting on mobile phones," as it states on its website.
Linx cameras can capture 2D images, but at the same time they receive accurate information about the “depth” of objects in the entire scene - something that Intel has demonstrated it can achieve with the RealSense 3D camera, which Dell has already leveraged, making the Dell Venue 8 7000 the first tablet with a depth camera.
In November 2013, Apple also acquired a company "that sees the physical world in virtual 3D."
Linx says that depth sensing allows for changing the focus of shots, accurately measuring objects, creating 3D models, and even changing the entire background during video calls.
