The latest Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET 5.1) update from Microsoft resolved various compatibility issues between Export Address Table Filtering (EAF+) and some programs.
EMET is a free security tool widely used in corporate environments to defend against common and known attacks. This is achieved through various mechanisms, such as EAF+, which was added in July, in version 5.0 of the tool.
The new version of the application released on Monday should no longer cause compatibility issues between EAF and Internet Explorer, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, and Mozilla Firefox.
Microsoft also fixed issues caused by interaction with Internet Explorer's Developer Tools and the Manage Add-ons feature in the web browser.
The new version also added Local Telemetry, a feature that allows memory dumps to be stored locally when implementing a mitigation.
The importance of this option lies in the fact that memory dumps can be analyzed at a later time and help the administrator determine the cause that triggered the mitigation response from EMET.
Upgrading to EMET version 5.1 is especially recommended for customers who have installed the previous version and are running Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 or 8.1, as compatibility issues were revealed with IE security updates in November.
Although EMET is not a panacea as security experts have found that the tool can be bypassed.
