Shocking information about cases of seduction by pedophiles was provided to the Parliament's Committee on Educational Affairs by Manolis Sfakianakis, director of the Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Prosecution Sub-Directorate.
The briefing took place in the presence of the Minister of Education Andreas Loverdos and concerned the issue of safe Internet navigation for students.
As Mr. M. Sfakianakis announced:
There are 10 cases of children, in Athens alone, who were seduced by a pedophile through the game "Dress Up Dolls" and their parents found them taking naked photos of themselves in the toilets.
In the period 2011-2014, the Cybercrime Prosecution indicted 1,028 people, of whom 271 were charged with child pornography.
Regarding suicides, in eight years 1,060 suicides were prevented, while 36 people went to intensive care.
"I was in New York and they told me something was happening in your country with a little girl who was self-harming in real time. I went on the channel and saw her. I immediately notified the unit, they located her and informed the DIAS team and the EKAB and we caught the little girl on the paraglider. The FBI awarded us for this case," he said.
The Minister of Education focused on bureaucratic problems, stating that a teacher who had repeatedly seduced a 6th grade student in Chania was appointed as a substitute teacher in Heraklion this year, as the file only states "behavior inappropriate for the service."
Meanwhile, an amendment concerning teachers who are prosecuted for crimes of sexual misconduct against minors will be submitted next week by Education Minister Andreas Loverdos, according to what he told the Parliament's Educational Affairs Committee.
The amendment will provide for a change in disciplinary law in order to automatically place a teacher against whom criminal prosecution is being pursued for crimes of pedophilia on leave (currently, an irrevocable referral to trial is required).
When disciplinary proceedings are initiated against a teacher for crimes against sexual freedom or for any crime of economic exploitation of sexual life, the act will be immediately and directly characterized as such (currently recorded as "dishonorable conduct in the service").
If an educational and administrative employee of the education system is imposed even the minimum disciplinary penalty for such an offense, one day, or the minimum criminal sanction, then he or she cannot remain in the education system, either as an educator or as an administrative employee.
