An amendment that tightens the penalties for teachers who are prosecuted for crimes of sexual misconduct against minors was announced by Education Minister Andreas Loverdos.
As he stated to the Parliament's Educational Affairs Committee, the amendment will provide for a change in disciplinary law in order to automatically place a teacher against whom criminal prosecution is being pursued for crimes of pedophilia on leave (currently, an irrevocable referral to trial is required).
When disciplinary proceedings are initiated against a teacher for crimes against sexual freedom or for any crime of economic exploitation of sexual life, the act will be immediately and directly characterized as such (currently recorded as "dishonorable conduct in the service").
If an educational and administrative employee of the education system is imposed even the minimum disciplinary penalty for such an offense, one day, or the minimum criminal sanction, then he or she cannot remain in the education system, either as an educator or as an administrative employee.
