Australian online shopping website Catch of the Day revealed that it was breached by hackers in early 2011, who managed to steal passwords and credit cards.
The company informed its customers on Friday that people who registered on its website before May 7, 2011, should change their passwords.
"In early 2011, Catch of the Day and other online retailers were the recipients of an illegal cyber intrusion, which resulted in the leakage of names, delivery addresses, email addresses and encrypted passwords. In some cases, credit card details were also leaked. Other websites in our Group were not affected," the website's customer service statement said.
"At that time, we immediately notified the police, banks and credit card companies who assisted us in taking action to protect our users, including canceling credit cards and initiating investigations into the perpetrators.".
"We have also informed the Australian Privacy Commissioner."
The company said it notified its customers today to change their passwords because "technological developments" indicated there was an increased risk of password leaks.
ZDNet, which first reported the story, said company representatives did not respond when contacted.
