Cybercrime Prosecution: Prevented 126 online suicides since the beginning of the year

Three new cases of attempted suicide have come to light in recent days

Three more cases of attempted suicide by internet users were prevented, following immediate and coordinated actions, by the Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate.

Specifically, in the first case, the day before yesterday (20.06.2014) in the morning, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate was informed that an individual had expressed his intention to commit suicide, through a post on the social networking website "Facebook".

Officers of the Cybercrime Investigation Division immediately conducted a thorough digital police investigation, in the context of which they managed to locate the electronic traces of the individual as well as his/her residential address in an area of ​​Kalamata. After informing the local Police Department and the ongoing investigation, it was determined that this is a 21-year-old Greek national. The police officers of the local Police Department went to her home, where they located the 21-year-old, who was then taken to a hospital for psychological support.

Regarding the second case, today (22.06.2014) in the morning, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate was informed that an individual had expressed suicidal intent through a real-time Internet conversation "IRC". In the context of the digital investigation and analysis of the electronic traces of this connection, its geographical location was immediately identified and it emerged that it belonged to a 39-year-old resident of Haidari. Police officers from the local Police Station were immediately informed, who rushed to the 39-year-old's home and ensured his physical integrity.

Finally, regarding the third case, today (22.06.2014) again in the morning the Directorate for the Prosecution of Electronic Crime was informed that a user of an online game of a specific company sent a message to this company in which he expressed his intention to commit suicide. In this case, too, the executives of the Directorate for the Prosecution of Electronic Crime were immediately mobilized, who, after a thorough digital investigation, determined that the message in question had been sent from an electronic connection in the area of ​​Byron. It was determined that the user of the game is a minor, specifically a 16-year-old citizen. Subsequently, police officers of the local AT were informed about the location of the minor, who ensured his physical integrity.

It is noted that since the beginning of the year, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate has prevented (126) cases of attempted suicide via the internet.
