According to a Fox News report, Iran has banned the instant messaging service WhatsApp in the country, due to the acquisition of the service by Facebook two months ago.
According to Abdolsamad Khorramabadi, head of Iran's Internet Crimes Committee, the main reason for the ban is that Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is an "American Zionist.".
Recall that Facebook acquired WhatsApp in February for $19 billion.
WhatsApp Messenger services have been unavailable to Iranian users since last weekend. Khorramabadi said other messaging services may also be banned in the near or distant future.
This is not the first time Iran has blocked access to a service. Last December, the popular WeChat app was blocked in the country, while access to Facebook and Twitter is impossible without the use of a proxy server.
