The real-life “Big Brother” made its way through Compton, California. Read how an entire city was put under complete surveillance. And when we say complete, we mean complete.
Compton's "experiment" points to our future. Or does it not?
In a secret test of mass surveillance technology, a team from the Los Angeles Police Department manned a civilian drone and sent it over Compton, California, to record everything. Everything that took place within a 10-mile radius.
The residents of Compton had no idea what was about to happen. The spy operation took place in 2012 and has now become known after it was reported to the American media.
Head of the operation Ross McNutt said: "We could fly freely over the city and with cameras recording everything and watching everyone, zooming in and following cars.".
He manufactures surveillance systems, some of which he hopes to sell to US police forces. As part of the agreement, his systems were used in the operation in question.
The comparative advantage of its technology is that it can do the job of both Google Earth and TiVo. It provides the ability to focus, but also rewind, so that interested parties can go back in time and check out all the details they may have missed.
His device can be used in Iraq and Afghanistan, while McNutt is willing to sell his products to US authorities, at a “bargain price”, as he says.
