Last glances at everyday life through the unique Oculus Rift…
If you are one of those skeptics who express concerns about the usefulness of virtual reality, this story may change your way of thinking.
Welcome to the amazing world of Oculus Rift and the magical things it can do!
A 90-year-old woman, whose final stage of cancer had made her so weak that she could no longer leave her home, used the magical device to see the outside world one last time.
Roberta Fistenberg's granddaughter, the electronic games developer Priscilla, took the famous Oculus VR Rift dev kit into her hands, which she reprogrammed to showcase the surrounding space outside her grandmother's house.
Using the Oculus Tuscany demo – which allows the user to explore a virtual mansion – Priscilla built the exact location, giving the grandmother the ability to navigate from the safety of her home. And of course she also added information from Google Street View as well as other features with which the sick elderly woman could interact.
«It may hurt a lot, but when you see a blue butterfly coming to kiss you … it makes you realize that we are all part of this world», said the elderly Roberta, who passed away four weeks after her last walk in the virtual reality of her neighborhood.
The world that Priscilla created with the virtual reality device included butterflies, waterfalls, and even a forest with fairies, in her effort to make her grandmother's final days a little more bearable.
The future will be virtual and why! After all, it's no coincidence that Facebook rushed to acquire the experimental Oculus VR for 2 billion dollars…
